More than ever, music and fashion are influencing each other, and forming a strong and special relationship that took the form of an exclusive artistic collaboration between Story to Line and Belgian music band Sonnfjord. In a fresh yet solar video clip shot in the luminous building of MAD, Brussels’ symbolic center for fashion and design, the singer of the group Maria-Laetitia Mattern interpreted Sonnfjord’s new single, Fresh Heart, and took center stage wearing outfits created by Story to Line fashion designers. Between two shots, the singer gave us a moment to discuss the collab, the relationship she has with fashion, and Sonnfjord’s visual style.
Music expressing itself visually through fashion
“Being an artist means you’re living your passion, it involves giving a lot of yourself and defending everyday a project that’s important to you”, and Brussels music band Sonnfjord is the project Maria-Laetitia Mattern is fighting for every day.
This young and sparkling group is giving a new breath to the Belgian music scene, especially with its new electrifying single, Fresh Heart, which Maria-Laetitia interpreted for Story to Line.
The young woman started writing her own songs when she was sixteen, and at the end of her communication studies she decided to really get into it.
“I’m a person who’s always feeling a lot of things, I’m very emotional, I live things intensely”, she explains. “My doctor already told me that I had to play sports because I have too much energy and instead, I chose music”.
Just like music, fashion is about stories and both worlds are about expressing emotions through an artistic vector that just changes shape.
And this collaboration with Story to Line is meaningful to Sonnfjord, as Maria-Laetitia explains it: “I’ve always been surprised to see that different artistic sectors don’t necessarily meet each other.”
“Dance is something I find very interesting. Video too, because any music has to be translated into an image, a visual universe. I find it very exciting to meet and support people who embark on their passion, it’s super rewarding to connect different fields.”
Sonnfjord’s visual identity
Although Maria-Laetitia says she know nothing about fashion, she recognizes the importance of translating her music into images and style. “I may not understand much about the world of fashion but it fascinates me, I actually care about it and I think we all unconsciously do pay attention to a video clip or images. A strong visual identity has an impact, and beyond marketing issues, I’m really only talking about the artistic side”.
Fashion helps any musical artist to transmit their universe, and Sonnfjord‘s is rather urban but at the same time classy and magical. Their world is quite nocturnal and has a certain melancholy. In her everyday life, Maria-Laetitia has a rather casual, natural and modern style. But when she’s going on stage or doing any kind of performance, she likes creating “astral” looks and playing with blue tones. Even though she’s not totally extravagant, she usually goes for an outfit that is going to put her in a good mood. Ilke Cop, Jessie Lecomte and Toos Franken are fashion designers she particularly appreciates, and whose outfits she preferred while shooting the collab.
